Grand Valley Ranch – Cahlik Preserve
Leaders: Laura Mock and Karen Dickson, joint Masters of Beagles with Chagrin Valley Beagles and Renee Boronka, Director of Education at Western Reserve Land Conservancy
Join us for a unique opportunity to watch a pack of sporting beagles explore the thickets at the Land Conservancy’s 1,200-acre Grand Valley Ranch in Orwell. We’ll learn from experts about the sport of beagling and spend the morning following the hounds. Beagling is a great way to reconnect with nature while sharing pleasant conversations with other outdoor enthusiasts. We’ll wrap up the morning around the fireplace in the lodge at the preserve.
The Chagrin Valley Beagles (CVB) are a local pack of sporting beagles, kenneled in Gates Mills, Ohio and managed by Laura Mock and Karen Dickson, joint Masters of Beagles. From September through the end of March, the CVB travels locally with the pack to various private farms, residences, and conserved land to enjoy the outdoor excursion of beagling on a weekend morning. Beagling is the traditional sport of using small scent hounds to attempt to track the path of a native cottontail rabbit, while followers on-foot trail behind the beagles to watch and listen to them work. The beagles are controlled by a huntsman, watchful guardian staff, and GPS collars, so we can help them stay safe as well as stay out of protected or out-of-bounds areas. Beagling, as practiced by the CVB, is a tracking-only sport and firearms are never involved. The sport has a similar environmental footprint to a group of birdwatchers, hiking through the countryside as 10-20 people may follow the pack of beagles and observe.
