February 29, 2024
Property is forever protected, soon to be open for public access

Western Reserve Land Conservancy is thrilled to announce the successful acquisition of the E.J. Mackenbach Preserve property, a pivotal addition to our region’s conservation efforts. This acquisition signifies a significant leap forward in our mission to protect and preserve natural lands for future generations.

Nestled in St. Marys, Ohio, the E.J. Mackenbach Preserve spans approximately 70 acres, boasting 40 acres of high-quality woodlands that are rare in the region. These woodlands serve as a sanctuary for diverse species and contribute to the region’s ecological health and biodiversity.

Among the notable features of the E.J. Mackenbach Preserve: It contains frontage along the historic Miami Erie Canal, offering visitors a glimpse into the area’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Situated across from the Miami Erie Canal are the Miami Erie Canal Towpath Trails, Buckeye Trail, and the North Country Trail, the preserve provides unparalleled opportunities for outdoor recreation and exploration. Its proximity, approximately one mile from the newly constructed St. Marys High School, makes it an ideal outdoor classroom for environmental education and research.

Adjacent to the existing Elizabeth Yahl Kuffner Nature Preserve, the E.J. Mackenbach Preserve forms a contiguous corridor of protected lands, enhancing habitat connectivity and resilience. This acquisition represents the largest land acquisition to date for the Heritage Trails Park District, underscoring their commitment to expanding public access to natural spaces and fostering community engagement.

“We are delighted to announce the acquisition of the E.J. Mackenbach Preserve, a true gem for Auglaize County and the surrounding area,” said Jacob Pries, Southeast Field Director at Western Reserve Land Conservancy. “This preserve not only safeguards critical habitats and historical landmarks but also offers a sanctuary for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers to connect with the natural world.”

The success of this project is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Western Reserve Land Conservancy, Heritage Trails Park District, Brian Mackenbach, and Kuck Realty. We are extremely grateful for our dedicated donors, including the trustees of the Dianne Komminsk Revocable Trust who made a major gift to support the expansion of conserved land in Auglaize and Shelby counties, Brian Mackenbach, Mike and Candy Kuck, Diana Goodwin, Ohio Public Works Commission, and the United States Forest Service. Together, we are paving the way for a sustainable future where nature thrives, and communities flourish.

“With its diverse habitats, connectivity to state and national trail systems, and close proximity to local schools, the E.J. Mackenbach Preserve will be a tremendous addition to the Heritage Trails Park District. The property has great potential for development into a valuable natural resource available to the public. The foresight, expertise, and hard work of Western Reserve Land Conservancy was vital for the acquisition of the E.J. Mackenbach Preserve and its addition to the park district. We have enjoyed working with Western Reserve Land Conservancy and helping implement their mission of conservation and restoration,” said David Stilwell, President of Heritage Trails Park District.
