Kate Pilacky has been active in the Great Lakes regional environmental world for over 30 years. She works in various aspects of conservation including hands-on fieldwork, biological surveys, land protection projects, stewardship, education, and fundraising.
As the local land manager for the Oberlin Preserve, one of the Land Conservancy’s signature natural areas. Kate has a particular interest in botany, including wetlands, woodlands, and prairies. She orchestrated the development of the Oberlin Preserve prairie in 2017. Kate is involved in the planning of other aspects of the Oberlin Preserve, including the boardwalk and future wooded trail to make the wet woods and wetlands more accessible.
Providing habitat for our pollinator species is of particular interest; Kate provides guidance to all sorts of inquiries regarding enhancing landscapes, yards, and gardens for good pollinator habitat.
Kate was one of the founders of the Firelands Land Conservancy (FLC) in 1997; The FLC merged into the Western Reserve Land Conservancy in 2006.
Kate has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kent State University and incorporates an artistic vision into her activities wherever possible; she has quite a collection of costumes of butterflies, bees, and other pollinator species used in various opportunities.
Kate lives in Oberlin with her husband David, and her two cats Wiley and Joe, and her dog Frida. She is especially busy at home during the growing season with vegetable gardening, wildflowers, trees, and shrubs to enhance the Oberlin Preserve and other areas.
