Ohio Department of Natural Resources partners with Western Reserve Land Conservancy to Conserve 135 acres
Funk Bottoms Wildlife Area Partners Celebrate a Collaboration to Expand Public Access Wildlife Area in Wayne and Ashland Counties
Western Reserve Land Conservancy is thrilled to announce the successful acquisition of 135 acres of prime wildlife habitat, marking a significant expansion of the beloved Funk Bottoms Wildlife Area. This milestone accomplishment was achieved through a partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife (DOW).
The acquisition not only secures a substantial addition to the Funk Bottoms Wildlife Area but also underscores the commitment of both Western Reserve Land Conservancy and ODNR to preserving Ohio’s natural heritage for future generations.
“This acquisition is a testament to the power of collaboration and shared dedication to conservation,” said Jacob Pries, Southeast Field Director for Western Reserve Land Conservancy. “We are delighted to partner with ODNR and DOW to expand the Funk Bottoms Wildlife Area, providing for more public access here in the state.”
The newly acquired 135 acres boast diverse ecosystems, including wetlands, woodlands, and open fields, creating an ideal habitat for a wide range of plant and animal species. The expansion will contribute to the overall health and resilience of the Funk Bottoms Wildlife Area, which has long been cherished by outdoor enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and nature lovers. This area supports 23 waterfowl species and 28 shorebird species. Perhaps most notably, the first nesting site of the state endangered Sandhill Crane was recorded in the area in 1988 and the area has continually been important for the recovery of this species in the state of Ohio.
“We are excited to join forces with Western Reserve Land Conservancy and other partners in this critical conservation effort,” said Scott Peters, District 3 Wildlife Management Supervisor with the ODNR Division of Wildlife. “Expanding the Funk Bottoms Wildlife Area ensures that this natural treasure will continue to thrive, providing recreational opportunities and ecological benefits for generations to come.”
The initial purchase of land for Funk Bottoms Wildlife Area began in 1991. Now, Funk Bottoms Wildlife Area is over 1,500 acres with the most recent additions coming with help from Western Reserve Land Conservancy, the Wilderness Center, and West Creek Conservancy.
The collaborative effort between conservation organizations and ODNR represents a model for effective conservation and underscores the importance of partnerships in safeguarding Ohio’s natural landscapes.
To celebrate this milestone, ODNR and H2Ohio are hosting a ribbon cutting and ground breaking event on November 14, 2023 at 9:30am at 10666 Blachleyville Road in Wooster. Reporters and the public are encouraged and welcome to attend. Parking will be at the observation deck directly across the street from the project site. Attendees will drive from East Funk Bottoms to the Muddy Fork project for a site tour and then to the West Funk Bottoms project. The event will provide an opportunity to learn more about the conservation efforts, explore the newly acquired land, and connect with the natural beauty of the expanded area.
