Woodland Cemetery

Leader: Dorothy Salem, Ph.D. Faculty Emeritus Tri-C & Educational Outreach Coordinator, Woodland Cemetery Foundation and Judy Semroc, Naturalist and Field Biologist, Nature Spark

Cleveland was the last stop for Freedom Seekers seeking safety in Canada across Lake Erie. It was one of the top ten port cities throughout the Great Lakes, but little original research has been done on the collaboration between the free black community and the white leaders. As a transplanted town established by mostly New Englanders, Cleveland became a model of militant abolitionism by the 1850s.  Woodland Cemetery, as the second city cemetery (established in 1853), became the final resting place for many of these black and white, women and men. The tour will highlight their roles, strategies, and stories.

Woodland Cemetery is a 60-acre greenspace in the heart of Cleveland’s Central neighborhood. Filled with many mature trees, it provides habitat for birds and other wildlife. While we learn about its history, Judy Semroc will point out the birds and other wildlife signs we may encounter.

Advanced registration is required.

Fee: FREE

Location: Directions will be sent to registrants. Woodland Cemetery is located along the E 69th block, between Quincy and Woodland Avenues in the Central Neighborhood of Cleveland, OH.
