Leader: Sharon Dewar, Author of 50 Hikes for Kids in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio and Judy Semroc, Naturalist & Field Biologist

Join Author Sharon Dewar and Naturalist Judy Semroc for a special day for Kids at the Land Conservancy’s Blue Heron Preserve. We’ll offer naturalist-led hikes through the preserve, a journaling activity and an opportunity to purchase 50 Hikes for Kids in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

The outdoors should be welcoming and accessible to everyone, no matter how little their legs. Designed to inspire wonder in children and foster a life-long appreciation for the natural world, 50 HIKES WITH KIDS features 50 of the most interesting and kid-friendly destinations in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. With its riversides, forests, prairies, wetlands and gorges, the Midwest is a magnificent natural playground.

Ms. Dewar will be signing her book following the program. We have partnered with local bookshop Loganberry Books to have books available for purchase at the event. If you’d like to pre-order your book, you have the option to pick it up at the event or have it mailed to you. For details, please visit:

About the Book

Designed to equip caregivers with the tools they need to spark a love of adventure in children, 50 Hikes with Kids features easy-to-read trail maps, intuitive directions, elevation and length details for every hike, restroom information, and places to grab a snack nearby. Plus, scavenger hunts for each trail make it fun for even the youngest trekkers to learn about local flora, fauna, and geology. With 50 Hikes with Kids, parents and caregivers can encourage kids to appreciate natural beauty even from a young age. As Dewar says, “Experiencing the wonders all around us creates lifelong habits of seeking out adventure, appreciating the gifts nature gives us every day, and caring about keeping our natural resources clean, beautiful, and accessible for future generations.” It’s time to pull on some little boots and go explore!
