How to Use the Science of Plant Survival Strategies for a Healthier Garden
Jared Barnes, Ph.D., Professor of Horticulture, Stephen F. Austin State University, TX
The eminent ecologist J. Philip Grime helped drive a paradigm shift from descriptive to functional studies of vegetation that today informs approaches of habitat restoration. Jared will detail Grime’s theory of plant strategies that established a framework of functional types—CSR—competitors, stress-tolerators and ruderals. Selection and design using these plant traits could drive ecosystems processes in predictable ways. Jared will illustrate how combining plants with these survival strategies can be helpful tools in designing and maintaining gardens using functional ecology.
About the Presenter
Dr. Barnes started gardening when he was five years old, and since then he
has enthusiastically pursued how to best cultivate plants and minds. He has a Ph.D. in horticultural science from North Carolina State University. He interned at The Scott Botanical Garden of Swarthmore College. He authors a weekly newsletter titled plant•ed, that was featured in the NY Times, and he hosts The Plantastic Podcast. He is an award-winning associate professor at Stephen F. Austin State College in Nacogdoches, TX. Recent awards include the 2021 Stephen F.
