Reforest Our City Tree Team Volunteer

The mission of Western Reserve Land Conservancy’s Reforest Our City Program is to increase Cleveland’s tree canopy by growing trees, advocating for mature trees, and empowering residents and volunteers. Since its inception in 2015, Reforest Our City has planted and given away over 17,000 trees in the City of Cleveland.  

We’re looking for passionate volunteers to help us grow and care for Cleveland’s tree canopy in a variety of ways, including assisting with plantings and outreach events.  

Volunteer Job Description
Responsibilities/Duties

Tree Team Volunteers will contribute to various aspects of tree care and community outreach, including: 

  • Tree Planting: Assisting with the planting of trees at designated sites. 
  • Tree Maintenance: Weeding and mulching tree beds to promote tree health and aesthetics.  
  • Watering: Regular weekly watering in summer months to ensure that newly planted trees thrive.  
  • Event Support: Supporting the Trees4CLE giveaway, including loading vehicles and assisting with deliveries and plantings. 
  • Community Engagement: Supporting staff and serving as a positive representative of the Land Conservancy. 

Qualifications

  • Passion for reforesting the Forest City. 
  • Comfort with performing physical tasks and lifting up to 30lbs. 
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. 
  • Strong communication skills and a positive attitude.  
  • Previous tree planting experience is a plus but not required. 

Location

Reforest Our City has tree planting sites throughout the City of Cleveland.
Time Commitment

Tree care needs vary by season; volunteers are encouraged to volunteer as their schedule allows.  

  • Volunteer events typically last for 3 hours maximum. 
  • Tree maintenance workdays are as needed throughout the year. 
  • Tree plantings are scheduled throughout spring and fall, with many plantings on Saturdays. 
  • Water maintenance is scheduled during weekdays throughout the summer months.  
  • Trees4CLE giveaways are scheduled on weekday evenings and Saturday, with one giveaway per spring and fall season.

  • Skill Development: Develop practical skills in tree planting, maintenance, and community engagement that are transferable to other volunteer opportunities or career paths. 
  • Training: Receive comprehensive training in tree planting and maintenance techniques. 
  • Forest Health: Contribute to the improvement of urban forest health, quality, and resilience. 
  • Community Improvement: Help enhance natural spaces in historically underserved neighborhoods. 
  • Environmental Benefits: Directly contribute to increasing Cleveland’s tree canopy, which helps reduce urban heat islands, improves air quality, and supports local wildlife habitats.

  • Volunteers will have the opportunity to work alongside dedicated staff and community members. 
  • All necessary tools and equipment will be provided. 
  • Safety protocols and guidelines will be provided to ensure a safe and productive volunteering experience.
