Land Management Volunteer

The stewardship team at Western Reserve Land Conservancy manages over 100 properties owned by the Land Conservancy, overseeing a variety of habitat restoration projects including planting pollinator habitat, managing invasive species, restoring habitats for rare species, and sustainably harvesting timber.  

We’re looking for dedicated volunteers to assist with land management activities on conserved properties. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys the outdoors, is comfortable working independently, and has experience operating equipment such as tractors and brush hogs. 

Job Description
Responsibilities/Duties

  • Vegetation and Habitat Maintenance: Complete necessary tasks to manage and maintain properties by operating a tractor and brush hog. 
  • Herbicide Application: Apply herbicide safely and effectively (training can be provided if needed).  
  • Plant Monitoring: Help identify and monitor native and invasive plants, and assist with invasive species control and restoration efforts. Plant ID knowledge is a plus but not required—we’ll teach you! 
  • Independent Outdoor Work: Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and terrain without supervision. 

Qualifications

  • Experience with tractor operation and brush hogging preferred. 
  • Comfortable handling herbicides or willing to be trained. 
  • Able to work alone with minimal supervision. 
  • Willingness to work in challenging weather and rugged environments. 
  • Interest in conservation and habitat restoration. 

Time Commitment

Flexible, with preference for volunteers available at least a few times per month. 
Training Provided

  • Safety training
  • Herbicide handling certification (if needed)
  • Basic Plant Identification
